Business evictions ban extended until March 2021

The government announced today that business owners affected by the Covid-19 pandemic will be protected from eviction until the end of March 2021.

With the usual next quarter rent day (25 December) approaching, communities Secretary Robert Jenrick, announced the ban on evictions of commercial tenants would be extended until the end of March 2021 to help struggling businesses “recover from the impact of the pandemic and plan for the future”.

This ‘final’ extension is to give landlords and tenants 3 months to come to an agreement on unpaid rent, but the government continues to advise that where businesses can pay any or all of their rent, they should do so.  The current ban on insolvency measures has also been extended to March 2021.

Alongside this, it was announced that a review of the ‘outdated’ commercial landlord and tenant legislation will be conducted next year to address concerns that the current legal position does not reflect the present economic conditions and that the government will provide further financial support to struggling businesses.
