Last week we reported that employees will shortly be able to obtain evidence that they need to stay at home on government advice because of coronavirus from NHS 111 online instead of having to get a fit note from their GP. The online coronavirus isolation note service has now been launched.
For the first seven days off work, employees can self-certify their absence. They do not need to provide evidence to their employer during that time. In cases of coronavirus, from day eight, employers can ask for evidence of sickness absence in the form of an isolation note (but they do not have to do so).
Coronavirus isolation notes can be used by employees who:
– Have used the NHS 111 online coronavirus service and are displaying symptoms;
– Have been told by a healthcare professional that they are displaying symptoms; or
– Live with someone else who is displaying symptoms.
Employees who can work from home as normal, even if they are displaying symptoms, do not need an isolation note.
Once the isolation note has been produced online, the person using the service can choose whether to download it and/or who to email it to. They could email it to themselves or, if they do not have an email address, to someone they trust or directly to their employer.
