Natasha’s Law – New Food Labelling Law

Refectories and school kitchens are now required to ensure that all food that is prepared and packed on the premises for direct sale to pupils and other users is labelled with the 14 major allergens.  This includes a prepacked sandwich, salad and ‘grab and go’ selections, which are made by your catering teams and placed on display ready for sale and consumption.

These changes were brought in following the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died after eating a wrapped baguette from Pret.  She had a known food allergy but unfortunately, the law at that time did not require full allergen labelling on a food product which was packed on the premises for immediate consumption.  Some food businesses were using shelf labels and ‘ask your server’ approaches to manage this food safety risk.  However, these were often confusing with serving staff not having up to date information.

These improvements, where every item is individually labelled, will allow people living with food allergies and intolerances to make safer choices about their food.
