Update on ban on possession orders – further extension by 2 months

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government placed a blanket ban on new evictions until 25 June 2020.

On 5 June 2020, Robert Jenrick, announced on Twitter:

“We are suspending evictions from social & private rented accommodation by a further two months.

Eviction hearings will not be heard in courts until the end of August and no-one will be evicted from their home this summer due to Coronavirus.”

This means that millions of renters (including licensees) will receive greater protection until 23 August 2020 and takes the moratorium on evictions to a total of five months.

Eviction hearings will not be heard in courts until the end of August.

In respect of commercial property, currently, a landlord is banned from forfeiting a lease for the non-payment of rent until 30 June 2020. It is not yet known if the government intends to extend this date.

We will provide further updates as they are announced.
