Ian Bowyer believes that being dependable is key to private client work

Ian Bowyer

Partner

Private Client work deals with times of high emotion, the death of a loved one, or loss of capacity, or planning for such events. At such times people want someone they can rely upon to advise and guide them and to take on some of the burden. Ian provides that support to his clients by being there for them at the key times to show a clear way through the fog that can descend at such times.

Testimonials

“I am so pleased to have met you and to have witnessed your skill and assiduity in various matters.  Asking for your assistance, not only personally, but more importantly for S is the best compliment I could pay you.  Thank you for getting my will over the line.  Your expert assistance/guidance has been invaluable.”

(JM QC)

“I would like to thank you and your team for the excellent job handling my late Aunt’s Estate, and completing the final accounts. The co-operation between us has been outstanding, and I hope that we will remain personal as well as business friends in the future. Should I require legal work in the UK, I will have no hesitation to appoint you and Greenwoods GRM in the future.”

(Private Client)

“Ian Bowyer has great experience in private client matters and is a pleasure to deal with.”

(Wealth Preservation Client in the Legal 500)

“Ian Bowyer has a calm, focused approach putting clients at ease and building a rapport quickly. Whilst he has broad technical expertise, future planning is a key strength for him. He works as a team with other professional advisers, something that is both unusual and refreshing, and definitely differentiates from the competition.”

(Wealth Preservation Client in the Legal 500)

Ian has experienced a broad range of issues as a Private Client lawyer. Particular strengths are:

  • Trust creation and administration – this is where Ian started and still has a keen interest
  • Heritage Property
  • Inheritance tax planning

A self-proclaimed “grammar school dropout”,  Ian joined Gregory Rowcliffe & Co in 1987 as a trust clerk where an aptitude for mathematics and an eye for details quickly moved him from trust assistant to running a large portfolio of private family trusts. It was not long before Ian had broadened his experience into estate administration, will drafting and succession planning.

Returning to education Ian qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives in 1993.

When the legal profession was opened up to all firms to promote Legal Executives to partner Ian became one of the first 100 in the country to be made partner.

Ian understands that family dynamics play as much a part in succession planning as assets and values and that good advice puts the client and their family at the centre of the thought process.

Ian provides clear explanations of complex issues and sets out the options that are available to clients, allowing them to make choices from a position of understanding. Ian is an “ideas” person and is not afraid to put forward left field options but they are always grounded in reality.

Examples of work undertaken:

  • £6m estate involving investments in multiple jurisdictions, commercial and residential property and an offer in lieu of tax for a work of art
  • Acting as trustee of a large private family trust holding commercial property and quoted investments with a large number of beneficiaries
  • Advising on a gift and rent back of a valuable residence
  • Acting for an elderly client wishing to get married at an advanced age and whose capacity to do so was being questioned.
  • Acting in the estate of an art collector and arranging for an offer in lieu of tax to be made so that a national art gallery could acquire a significant work of art from the estate prior to the gallery’s opening.

If you are looking for clarity, understanding and sensible advice with an arm round the shoulder approach then Ian could be the right person for you.

When not working Ian has a keen interest in military history frequently dragging his family across some long forgotten battlefield, plays golf to a poor standard, and supports Leeds United (we have to live with the choices we make at a young age).
