Sarah Grant

Sarah works with businesses that are trying to get something out of a laboratory and into the world. 

She is a Chartered UK and European Patent Attorney, and a biochemist before that – a first-class master’s in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from Oxford, then training at a London patent firm. Five years in technology transfer at NHS Innovations London taught her the commercial half of the job: taking inventions from clinicians, working out which parts were protectable, finding proof-of-concept funding, and setting up spin-out companies around them. 

That combination shapes how she advises. Sarah starts with what the business is trying to do and works back to what needs protecting, rather than filing everything that can be filed and sending an invoice. For early-stage companies, where the budget is finite and a filing strategy set badly in the first year is expensive to unpick in the third, that distinction matters. 

Her technical work is in life sciences: nucleic acid technologies including synthesis methodologies, biological therapeutics and vaccines including cells, viruses and nucleic acids, and diagnostics and biological assays including high-technology apparatus. 

Sarah joined Greenwoods in September 2026 to lead the intellectual property practice area, after 15 years at Stratagem in Cambridge, the last four as its CEO. 

Outside work she enjoys small group training at the gym, in particular lifting weights, and is usually trying to beat a number she set the week before. All too rarely, she says, does she beat it.
