Our values
Most law firms have values. They put them on the website, maybe on a poster in reception, and then everyone gets back to work.
Ours are different because we actually use them. They’re how we run our business, and what we say no to when something doesn’t fit.
Four values. That’s it.
This isn’t about being perfect or winning awards (though we’ve done alright on that front).
It’s about taking proper ownership of your work. When you take something on, you see it through. You don’t pass problems up the chain or hide behind “that’s not my job.” You figure it out.
It also means being available when clients need you. Not in a “we’re available 24/7” way that burns everyone out, but in a “you can actually get hold of your lawyer when you need them” way. Which shouldn’t be remarkable, but apparently it is.
This one’s straightforward: treat people well.
Be mindful of how your actions affect others. Say thank you when someone helps you. Give feedback that’s actually useful, not just critical. Support your colleagues when they need it.
It sounds basic, but law firms aren’t always great at this. Egos get in the way. Hierarchies create problems. We’ve worked hard to build a culture where people treat each other well because it’s the right thing to do, not because someone’s watching.
Law firms love telling their people exactly how to do things. We’d rather hire good people and let them get on with it.
That doesn’t mean no structure or accountability – that would be chaos. It means trusting people to know how to do their jobs. Giving them room to make decisions without checking in at every step. Encouraging them to try new approaches rather than insisting on “the way we’ve always done it”.
Yes, we put “fun” in our company values.
What we mean is: work doesn’t have to be miserable. You can take your job seriously without taking yourself seriously. You can celebrate when things go well. You can actually enjoy spending time with your colleagues.
This matters because burnt-out, miserable lawyers don’t do good work. And life’s too short to spend it somewhere you hate.
These four values – excellence, respect, freedom, fun – aren’t revolutionary. But they’re real. We hire based on them. We’ve let people go for not living up to them. They’re woven into how we actually operate, not just what we say we’re about.
That’s the difference between values that mean something and values that are just words on a website.
