Home // Insights & Events // Who do you want to be when you are dead?
It may sound like a crass question. As children, we were constantly asked: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer was usually “archaeologist.” It was never “Army officer” or “lawyer”… yet here we are.
Growing up, it often felt like there was pressure to have a definitive answer, so that all the effort our parents invested in raising and educating us would feel worthwhile. I’m not sure if today’s children are asked the same question as frequently, but the idea persists: we are expected to plan for the future, even from a young age.
But here’s a question few would ever dare ask their elders: “Who do you want to be when you are dead?”
Families often skirt around topics of legacy, succession, and inheritance, yet these are fundamental questions everyone eventually faces:
While existential, these are questions many people quietly confront as they age, even if not directly.
As Theodore Roosevelt once suggested (paraphrased): nothing worth doing is ever easy. Planning one’s legacy and arranging affairs properly is no exception. Taking care to thoughtfully preserve and protect wealth with foresight and discipline takes time, but it brings peace of mind, knowing you’ve done all that reasonably can be done for future generations.
The Greenwoods’ Private Wealth team can help you answer these difficult questions with empathy, patience, and expertise. From Wills, Powers of Attorney, Inheritance Tax planning, succession planning, trusts, and family investment companies, to connecting you with other trusted professionals, we provide the guidance you need to make prudent, considered decisions.
By taking these steps now, you can reduce the burden on yourself in later life and on future generations, leaving behind not just assets but a legacy of care, thoughtfulness, and security.
