Flash update: New edition of JCT contracts announced

JCT has recently announced its next edition of contracts, JCT 2024. This edition will replace the current edition, JCT 2016. It continues to be the most widely used standard form of contract suite in the UK.

As the 2016 edition, JCT 2024 will continue to be available in digital form and traditional hardcopy.

The main changes and features of JCT 2024 include:

  • Modernising and streamlining – including the new use of gender-neutral language and increased flexibility about the service of notices electronically.
  • New contracts – including a new contract family: JCT Target Cost Contract – main contract, subcontract and supporting guide.
  • Legislative changes – incorporating key legislative changes such as the Building Safety Act, Termination accounting and payment provisions in line with the Construction Act and new insolvency grounds pursuant to the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act 2020.
  • Future proofing – including changes to reflect the objectives of the Construction Playbook, and the incorporation of previously optional supplemental provisions relating to Collaborative Working, Sustainable Development and Environmental considerations.

No drafts of the new suites are available yet, but we will keep you updated and provide more detail about the application of the new contracts.

We work with many clients advising about procurement, contract negotiation, interpretation and drafting including the JCT suite of contracts as well as ICE, NEC and FIDIC. If you would like help, please get in touch with our highly experienced Construction team.
